Fraction Definitions
There are a few basic fraction definitions you need to be aware of before we start looking at things you can do with them.
In Math . . .
If a and b are integers then the quotient $a/b$ or $\frac{a}{b}$ is called a fraction. The a number is called the numerator; the b number is called the denominator.
In English . . .
A fraction is just one integer divided by another, e.g. 3/4 or $\frac{-2}{3}$. Fractions have two parts:
numerator | ⇒ | 3 |
denominator | ⇒ | 4 |
The position of negative signs sometimes causes a little confusion. Ultimately, it doesn't matter whether a negative sign goes in the numerator, the denominator or in front of the fraction.
$$\frac{-3}{4} = \frac{3}{-4} = -\frac{3}{4}$$
